Thanksgiving Facts You Didn’t Know

Thanksgiving is all about settling down at the table with family or friends and digging into a big meal. This year, when you will enjoy your Thanksgiving meal with your loved ones, educate and surprise them with not so common thanksgiving facts. Thomas Salzano, a New Jersey-based guitarist, hairstylist, photographer, traveler, and a blogger shares some cool facts:
  1. Sarah J. Hale, who was a writer and editor of a women’s magazine, Godey’s Ladies Journal is considered as the “Mother of Thanksgiving”.

  2. Turkey was the first meal eaten by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon. Turkey was stored in the lunar module and it was eaten along with sugar cookies, peaches, pineapple grapefruit drink, and coffee.
  3. Since November 6, 1879, Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada.
  4. During the 2007 Thanksgiving, Americans consumed approximately 690 million pounds of turkey. This equal the weight of 4.48 million individuals of average weight. The figure resembled the weight of Singapore’s population according to the 2005 census.
  5. Benjamin Franklin was unhappy when the bald eagle was chosen as the official United States’ bird. In a letter to his daughter, he wrote: “For my own part I wish the Eagle had not been chosen the representative of our country” and “For in Truth, the Turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird and withal a true original native of America”.

  6. The first Thanksgiving was held by the pilgrims of Plymouth Colony and the Wampanoag Indians in November 1621.

  7. Arnold Schwarzenegger once said: "I love Thanksgiving turkey. It's the only time in Lose Angeles that you see natural breasts."
